OPAL is an international collaborative effort by libraries and other ogranizations to provide web-based programs and training for library users and library staff members.Examples of OPAL public online programs include book discussions programs, interviews, special events, library training, memoir writiing workshops, and virtual tours of special digital library collections.

“Virtual Worlds, Kids, Tweens and Teens: Â Welcome to Whyville!”
According to a recent New York Times article, 2008 is the year of
virtual worlds for kids! Â Virtual worlds for kids are growing rapidly
- libraries and other educational agencies need to be there. Â Attend
this web conference on OPAL (Online Programming for All Libraries) on
Friday January 25 at 10 am central, 11 am eastern, 8 am pacific or at
2 pm central, 3 pm Eastern, 12 noon Pacific. This hour long seminar
will feature speakers Tom Peters of TAP Information Services providing
an overview the growth of virtual worlds for kids, Cliff Zintgraff of
Whyville providing an introduction and tour of Whyville, and Kelly
Czarnecki of the Public Library of Charlotte/Mecklenburg County
talking about why it is important for librarians and educators to be
in worlds like Whyville.
