Information Literacy Skills

Just because it’s on the Internet, doesn’t mean it is true or correct.

Web site evaluation form students can complete when doing research on the Web.

Important news about the velcro crop in the Central Valley:

  1. Ask students to evaluate this site and make recommendations for improvement. What do you think they would recommend?

How would you like to go to on a free vacation to Mankato, MN?!!!

  1. Have your students try to locate this place on the map.

Great resources for stressing the point to students that they need to be information literate in this day and age and should never take information at face value without first verifying the validity of the information.

Global Scholar

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

This site has been refered to as an E-Bay for Education.  It facilitates buyers and sellers in the world of teaching and learning.  Potential tutors submit their offering, advertising what they can teach, their availability, and their charge — roughly $10 to $50 an hour.  GlobalScholar runs an extensive security check on the tutor, and if passed, the tutor is added to the searchable catalog, which is organized by grade level and subject area.  Tutors are ranked in the listings by the ratings of their past clients — a trust index.

The Future of Classroom Clickers?

Many of you have seen the classroom performance systems where students answer questions using little remote control devices. The teacher is able to instantly pull up charts and reports that show exactly how the class did as a whole directly following the students’ input.  Polleverywhere is a tool that allows students to use their cell phone to response to classroom questions. This eliminates the remote control devices but requires that every student have a phone.

Still a very early technology, but possibly a foreshadowing of things to come….

A competition where we invite K-12 students to play around with our homepage logo and see what they come up with. This year we’re inviting U.S. kids to join in the doodling fun, around the intriguing theme “What if…?” At Google we believe in thinking big, and dreaming big, and we can’t think of anything more important than encouraging students to do the same. So we hope you’ll gather those art supplies and some 8.5×11 landscape paper and encourage your kids to enrich us all with their creative visions of our world, as it is and as it might be.
