Build Your Own “YouTube” – PhpMotion

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

A couple months ago I saw a presentation where a teacher was using student created screen capture videos to help them learn math concepts. What caught my attention was the fact that they were sharing them on what appeared to be a “private” YouTube-like service. After further investigation I learned the site was using an application titled phpMotion.  This OpenSource application allows you to create your very own video file sharing service. This can be set up within your school network for complete secure access or opened up to the rest of the planet…if you wish.

Note: This application works in conjunction with a few other OpenSource applications, so installation is a bit more involved then, say, a Moodle or Wordpress install.

MuseumBox – Web Based Multimedia Presentation Tool

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

“This  site provides the tools for you to build up an argument or description of an even, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual box. What items, for example, would you put in a virtual box to describe your life; the life of a Victorian Servant or Roman soldier; or to show that slavery was wrong and unnecessary? You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view comments on the museum boxes submitted by others..”

Here’s an example of a completed MuseumBox:

Use to create drops and privately share your files by web, email, phone, fax, and more. Drops are protected from search engines so you can conveniently share what you want, how you want, with whom you want.

I created one for use this weekend at the CLMS 2008 Technology Conference:

Track-n-Graph is a powerful information tracking and graphing solution that allows you to track just about anything. Have you ever wanted to easily track something but you just didn’t have the time, skills, or desire to create a spreadsheet to do it? Maybe you wanted to track . . .

  • * your weight, eating plan, workout schedule…
  • * your blood pressure, cholesterol level, heart rate…
  • * your baby or child’s growth rate…
  • * hours of sleep per night…
  • * number of celebrity arrests per week…
  • * your test scores, grades…
  • * a sales competition…
  • * car mileage…
  • * mileage your team logged for marathon training…
  • * amount you spend on coffee per week…

Track-n-Graph breaks through the limitations of today’s existing solutions by letting you define what information you want to track, how you want to collect it, and how and who you want to view it. Instead of signing up for multiple sites or services, you sign up for Track-n-Graph and have a single source for all of your tracking needs.

“The all-powerful” data visualizer.

This tool works with local Excel spreadsheets or online data feeds such as Google Spreadsheets to create visual representation of data that can be posted to your web site, blog, Moodle page, etc. etc.
